Wellington, Saturday. Lord Normanby's commission as Governor of Victoria will arrive with the San Francisco mail, per Hinemoa. this evening. Sir Hercules and Lady Robinson and the staff will probably leave Sydney for Wellington on the Hth March iu H.M.S. Wolverine, accompanied by H M.S. Emerald. The Times this morning states that at the late Hutt races the owner of Lara demanded .£SO from the person who drew Lara in North's sweep, otherwise Lara would not be allowed to run. Mr Knyvett, who drew the horse, agreed to pay, and out of the £400 prize £50 went to Squires, Lara's owner. Plans of filter beds for the water supply are being prepared by the Corporation En gineer. The Governor held a farewell undress levee to-day when there was a very large attendance, the Chief Justice and all the Ministers except Sir George Grey were with the Governor. The Town Clerk read a farewell loyal address signed by the Mayor on behalf of the City Council and citizens of Wellington. His Lordship, in reply, remarked on the wonderful change in the city even since he had been here, while from the character of the buildings now being erected, and the signs of progress everywhere visible, he had no doubt that within a few years Wellington would be one of the finest cities iuthe colony He should always feel the deepest interest in the welfare and prosperity of New Zealand and he bad every confidence that his warmest wishes would be speedily realised. He said he left N ew Zealand with extreme regret but haying been offered the Governorship of Victoria, though entirely unsolicited, he felt bound as a servant of her Majesty to accept „. . T Monday. Chief Justice Prendergast wiil be sworn in as acting Governor until the arrival of Sir H. liobmson. The race horses Laertes and Agent will leave for the South by the Bingarooma toThe person who drew Lara in North's Sweep writes in the Time* exonerating the owner from the charge of levying blackmail, explaining that the offer was spontaneously made by the drawer of Lara. At a meeting of the creditors in the estate of J. Henderson, C.E., the assets were put down at £53,158, and the liabilities at £18,486. The assets include £25,000 due by Messrs J. Brogden aud Sons contingent on the payment by the New Zealand Government of contract moneys for the construction of railways; Oamaru Corporation, £15,000Messrs Baron and Mana, bankers, Brazil, £2000; land in New Brunswick, £5000. The meeting was adjourned for ten days. Blenheim, Monday. A dwelling house belonging to Philip Willow, Leafield run, was destroyed by fire on Saturday evening; origin unknown. The nre broke out in a new part. The dwelling was insured for £500 in the South British. Loss not short of £1700, if the furniture was destroyed, of which reports are contradictory.
