Nelson Evening Mail. SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 8, 1879.

It is with great pleasure that we have today to record another success on the part of the Nelson College. About two months ago, as perhaps will be remembered by some of our readers, we announced that a number of Nelson lads had gone up for the Civil Service examinations which were then taking place in the Provincial Hall. The result of these examinations has just been made known, and it certainly is most satisfactory to find that out of 21 candidates for the junior examination, 18 have passed, and out of seven for the senior, that five have beeu successful. The junior examination is not supposed to be a very stiff oue, but it, at all events, shows that the boys must have been well grounded both at the College and at the schools where they were taught before proceeding to that institution, when we find so large a proportion of those who went up for it proving successful. The following are the names of those who passed : — Junior : Allen. Barltrop, Bullard, Bunny, Burnett, Emerson, Evans, Foy, Goulstoue, Greenfield, Hoult, Killing, Lowe, ilclvor, Rout, Thompson, and Yickerman. Seuior .- Andrew, Foy, Moynihan, Rout, and Vickerraan Deck, of Motueka, also passed the senior examination. The Fire Brigade had a special practice last night, when a quantity of gorse upon an acre in Trafalgar-street south was set fire to, and the alarm sounded. In a very few minutes the Brigade were on the spot with all the necessary appliances, and the effect of the water was forcibly shown in some places where the fire had obtained a strong hold of the gorse, and the flames were blazing upwards to the height of fifteen to twenty feet. The practice was the means of gathering together a large crowd of spectators. The Rev. R. Bavin announces that he will hold an open air service at the pedestal at S p.m. to-morrow. Mr Acton Adams to-day received from the Hon. Mr Stout the following telegram which he has handed to us for publication :— " To Acton Adams Esq., M.H.R.—Congratulate you and those who supported secular education on your return.— R. Stout." What will be a novelty in Waimea West, namely, a Christmas tree of gigantic propor-

tions, heavily laden with prizes, and brilliantly lighted, will be on exhibition at St. Michael's Sunday School room on Wednesday evening, when the prizes, tickets for which will be issued at a shilling each, will bo distributed. During the^eveniuff there will be music arid singinp: by uidy aud gentleman amateurs who have kindly promised to attend from Nelson. A telegram t'mm Invercargill states that Mr Paticrbun, has been suffering from an aberration of iutcllcct. lie came over from Melbourne several years ago to edit the Examiner in Nelson, and then w&s sub-editor for some time on the N.Z. Herald.
