EDUCATION BOARD.

Thursday, Feb. 6. Present : Messrs Barnicoat (chairman), Wastney, Campbell, Malcolm, Shephard, | Rout, JacksoD. Miuutes of last meeting read and confirmed. The report of the Works and Finance Committee was adopted, with several modifications. The chief points were as follows : 1. That the selection of a site for Brightwater school be left to the Works Committee. 2. That Mr John Scott bo appointed architect to the Board during the current year, at a remuneration of 2§ per cent for plans, 'and j 2£ per cent for inspection, not less than four j visits being given in each case. It was understood that Mr Scott is not to tender for any school buildings so long as he continues to act as the Board's architect. 3. That the recommendation of the Stoke Committee as to the position of the addition to the Stoke school be acceded to. 4. That Mr C. M'Donald's tender for £61 10s for excavating and gravelling in Toi-Toi Valley be accepted, as beiDg the lowest tender. 5. That Mr R. Henry's tender for constructing the steps at Toi Toi Valley School, £60 (the only tender) be accepted. 6. That Mr H. Baigent's offer to make the proposed additions to Hope school for £23 10s be accepted, and that the Hope Committee be requested to point out to the , contractor the site for the new building. 7. That Mr H. Plank's tender of £90 for the repairs of the Spring Grove school be accepted, there being no other tender. 8. That the Secretary be instructed to have the proposed school sites at Addison's Flat and Waimangaroa surveyed. 9. That the buiiding of the school house at Addison's Flat be proceeded with at once. 10. That the Board's architect be instructed to prepare plans for a school house at Waimangaroa to accommodate 90 scholars. Resolved, That Mr John Hale be appointed i master of Motupiko school, the Motupiko I Committee having been previously consulted. Resolved, That the Secretary furnish the Charleston Committee with the names of the candidates for the raistressship of the girls' school, together with such other information i as to the qualifications of the applicants as he may consider desirable Resolved, That Miss Melody and Miss Crumpton be provisionally appointed assistants at Reefton at a salary of £75 per annum, such appointment to be confirmed on their passing the general examination in June, 1879. These appointments were made on the recommendation of the Reefton Committee. Resolved, That Miss O'Keefe be provisionally appointed assistant at the girls' school, Weatport, her appointment to be confirmed on her passing the June examination. (The Westport Committee was consulted in this case, but declined making any recommendation.) Salary £60 per annum. Resolved, That Mr J.*W. Humphrey be provisionally appointed master of the 88 Valley school ou the same conditions with respect to examination as the foregoing teachers. j Resolved, That Mr N. Jenniogs be teruporarily appointed master of the Pangatotara school at a salary of £100, the Pacgatotara Committee to be consulted before a permanent appointment be made. Resolved, That MissTarrant be appointed assistant at Neudorf at a salary of £48, the Upper Moutere Committee approving of the appointment. Resolved, That in compliance with the request of the Motueka Committee, a second assistant at a salary of £48 be advertised for. Resolved also, That an assistant mistress for Riwaka at a salary of £48 per annum,

and an assistant master for Haven Koad school; at a salary of £120, be advertised for. „ , Kesolvcd; Thai the Question of re-adjusting the salaries of the raasters pi Haven roa<l and Hampden-street achools be referred to the Fitiauce Committee, who are to report at the Board's next meeting. Resolved, That the Board take a 21 years' lease of the Hiwaka reserve, at a yearly rent of £2, to be expended iu books for the Riwuka Public Library. Resolved, Tnat the Board cannot, at present, afford sewing mistresses for Hope and Ranzau schools. Resolved, That £12 each be allowed to the Upper and Lower Wakefield Committees to defray the cost of verandahs to the teachers houses, and that the Board's architect prepare the plans and inspect the work. Resolved, That the- list ot persona nominated by School Committees to fill up the vacancies in the Board, I*9 published, nmi that a co/p? of the list be forwarded to each Committee. Resolved, That the liime for the first meeting of School Committees recently elected be fixed for Thursday, February 13/ *t 8 p.m., the place being the Committee's usual place of meeting. Resolved, That School Committees be requested, in compliance with the Education Act, to send to the Secretary the names of the members elected, together with the names of the Chairman and Secretary of each Committee. Resolved, That the election of a School Committee for VVaimea West take place at the Village School House, on February 24th at 8 p.m., the householders having failied to elect a Committee at the time previously appointed, the time for the first meeting being immediately after the election. Resolved, That the election of three members of the Board take place on Thursday, March 13th at noon, in the Board-room Neison.

Resolved, That after hearing the report of the Inspector on the matter, Rockville, in the Collingwood district, be continued a school district. Resolved, That the Secretary apply to the Collingwdod Road Board for a bridge over Pakawau creek, which has to be crossed daily by the school children. The Chairman having explained to the Board that he should not be able to go to Westport to inquire into the matter of the expulsion of three boys from the school, it was Resolved, That C. Broad Esq. R.M., be requested to inquire into the case and report thereon to the Board. Resolved, That the Board's architect be instructed to prepare plans for a teacher's house at Lower Wakefield similar to that in course of erectiou at Richmond Resolved, That Mr Rathbeen's letter as to the examination of his son for a college scholarship be again considered At next meeting. Resolved, That Mr Gilbertson be allowed an extension of time (one month) for the completion of the additions at Motueka. The Inspector was instructed to make further enquiry as to the necessity fora new school at Black's Point oa his visit to the West Coast in April. Resolved, That £6 be allowed for outbuildings at Kararuea. The Secretary was instructed to inform the Ivarnmea Committee that unless the attendance there increases during the next quarter a mistress must be substituted for a master. The Inspector was instructed to enquire into the circumstances of the election of the School Committee at Lower Wakefield, with a view to reporting to the Board at its next meeting. Besolved, That the Town Committee be authorised to make temporary appointments of teachers in the absence of the Inspector, and that the Inspector, at the request of the Town Committee, confer with them as to the number of scholars to be admitted to each of the towD school-rooms. Resolved, That the request of the Westport Committee to have a portion of the boys school constituted a high school be not entertained at present. Resolved, That the Lower Takaka Committee be authorised to expend a portion of the grant for painting and lining the schoolroom. Resolved, That Mr Shephard he requested to accompany the Inspector to Hampden during the current month, with a view to determining where the school shall be placed, and other matters of importance. Resolved, That the building at Riwaka be postponed for a month. Resolved, That the memorial praying that Brighton be constituted a separate school district be considered next month. Cheques amounting to £2062 Is 2d were approved and signed.
