CITY COUNCIL.
All the members were present at the ordinary meeting held on Friday night. Letters were read from the Under Secretary inviting the Council to act as the Local Committee in connection with the Sydney Exhibition ; from the Under Secretary of" Crown Lands stating that the Botanical Reserve could be brought under the Public Domains Act; and from Mr Cockram asking for a renewal of his lease of the cattle market reserve. This, it was decided to put up to auction. The following tenders were received for ailing up the old watercourse in Gloucesterstreet :— W. Jones, £32; W. Lloyd, £36- J Smith, £*7; R Carter, £44. The tender of W. Jones wa3 accepted. Cr Little moved, That the Council offer a bonus of £100 for the best complete system of drainage for the town. There being no funds in band for the purpose, a seconder was not forthcoming, and the motion lapsed. Cr Harley withdrew his motion for extending Halifax-street to the Port road, also, on account of the lack of funds, though he stated that the work would cost less if undertaken now than after the completion of the railway. The Council then adjourned.
