[*HE9a AGENCY.] Wellington, Monday. Air G. B. Barton, the editor of the New Zealand Jurist, has been appoiutedasssistant Law Officer of the Crown, in place of Mr Stafford, who has gone into business. The Underwriters' Association report under date London Jan 17, the arrival of the Chasca from Wellington, Waimate from Lyttelton, and Arkshow from Outnaru. Tuesday. Mr D. M. Luckie, the newly appointed Commissioner of Annuities, entered upon his new duties yesterday.— The last of "the quarantined immigrants "at Soaines Island are to be released to-day.— The Hon. J. Martin is cutting up the estate lately owned by the Hon. Mr Waterhouse, and will offer about 40,000 acres in small farm sections by July next. The estate is very much overrun with rabbits. The land will be sold on deferred payments. The Titanic Steel and Iron Company have resolved to issue 2000 special shares and to bring up the nominal capital of the Company to £50.000, the directors to have power at any time to cancel these shares, but, until a dividend is declared, 9 per cent per annum is be paid on the amouut pai:i up. Thes resolutions have been come to in order t enable the Company to entitle itself to certain lands in Tarauaki. Another meeting will be held in three months to confirm the resolutions passed last night. The young lad Bacon, who stole the bundle of notes (£265) from the Anchor Line office wa3 brought up before the R.M. this morning, and fully committed for trial at the next criminal sessions. Bail was allowed the boy's father in £200 and two sureties in £100 each. The Union S.S. Company have just completed arrangements with the postal department for testing a proposed new scheme in connection with the San Francisco mail costal time table. The new proposal is to employ more than one coastal steamer, and the result of the change will be to give Invercargill, Dunedin, Christchurch. Wellington, Nelson, Taranaki, and the up couatry districts connected with them, at least a day later for mail correspondence, besides admitting certain ports to benefits not previously enjoyed by them. Napier alone will be the loser of a day. A recent London telegram says :— There was a partial run on the London and County Bank onFriday last, but it was quite causeless. Ihe directors announce a dividend of 9 per cent for the half year. _, Auckland, Tuesday. ihe valuation of the City of Auckland for 18,9, amounts to £155,'.'47 as compared with £140,513 for I*7B. Several properties are exempted by the Acts of last session or the increase would have been much larger — lour tradesmen were fined in the Police Court this morning for having uustamped weights aud measures in their possession. — Ibe herald to-day says: — "We are authorised by the Native Minister to state that the telegram purporting to give the terms agreed on between Rewi and the Government is absolutely without foundation and false in every possible respect. Rewi has never asked for, nor would the Government accede to, such terms."
