[Special.] Loxdox, Jannary 18. Sir M. Hicks-Beach yesterday addressed a despatch to the Governors of the colonies, stating that the Treasury consent to continue the present postal arrangements till February 1880, and that then they must revise the rates. It is proposed to retain fourpence per letter. The colonies must not expect the Imperial Government to contribute towards competing lines when they have no control over the management. The colonies are requested to authorise the Agents General to discuss the Treasury proposals and conclude arrangements during the year. Money is in large supply for the commercial requirements. The Bank reserve is in a satisfactory position, 11 > mill'oa being in stock. The market is firm; Consols 96. Australian Securities arc resuming their usual activity. Winding up orders have been granted against Blacknavon and Co. and Brooker and Co., Glamorgan iron masters. The liabilities are heavy. The latter is indebted to the West of England Eand £600,000. Wool : 4000 bales have been sold privately. The Liverpool auctions are neglected. The depression in the wheat trade continues. There are large arrivals from California.
