The Nelson Evening Mail. SATURDAY, JANUARY 18, 1879.

A communication in reference to the i Durville's Island copper mine is unavoidably held over until Monday. The aunual meeting of the subscribers to the Richmond Institute will be held ou Monday evening. The criminal sittings of the District Court will be held on Monday, commeuciug at 10 oxlock. The members of the Harmonic Society are requested to meet for practice this evening. The programme of Miss Amy Sherwin's first concert to be given on Wednesday evening appears in our advertising columns. Special services in connection with (he anniversary of the Congregational Church will be hold to-morrow, in the morning by , the Rev. J. Beckenham, and in the evening by the Rev. Allan Webb. The usual tea and public meeting will be held ou the following Tuesday. Ix the Magistrates' Court yesterday, after we went to press, the prisoners Theodore Wilson and William Mercer were committed for trial on a second charge of stealing furniture from Mr James' warehouse. A third information had been laid but this was not proceeded with. Mn. Kikton, the Chief Postmaster returned to Nelson this morning in the Taiaroa, after a trip to San Francisco, whither he went in the capacity of mail agent. During his absence the work of the office has been well and efficiently performed by Mr Cresswell, the chief clerk, who acted as his locum tenens. A telegram has been received in town from Dr. Hector, stating that the Government are about to appoiut a Commissioner for the Sydney Exhibition, and as it is getting late iv (he season no time should be lost iv securing wool which is an article that should be well represented. James, £4; Skittle ground, W Stallard, £1 ; Cards, J. Carter, 15s. A presentation of a silver watch was made yesterday to Mr F. C. Pettit by MrM. Lightband, on the occasion of his leaving Nelson, and consequently the employ of the firm of Lightband and Co., Mr Lightband speaking in most complimentary terms of the manner in which he had conducted himself during the five years he had been in their service, Mr Pettit was then presented by Mr M'Comchie, on behalf of his fellowworkmen, with a handsome watch guard, as a token of their respect for him. Mr Pettit replied, warmly thanking them for their kindness, and expressing the wish that it might always be his lot to be associated with such pleasant companions as those he was now leaving.
