The following are the vital statistics for the year 1878 for the district of Nelson and Waimea as far as the Wairoa River:— Births, 343, against 334 in the previous year; marriages 97, against 89 in 1877; deaths 132, the number in the previous year having been At the Magistrate's Court yesterday, before J. W. Barnieoat, and 11. Martin, Esqs., J.J.P , E. Hooper sued P. K. Watty for £8 Is 7d for rent, and obtained a judgment. The case of Burlace v. J. Russ and Burnett for amount due for reut wa3 adjourned the loth inst to be heard iv Nelson. It will be seen by our telegrams that nearly the whole of the money abstracted from the shipping office of the Anchor Line in Wellington has been recovered, the office boy proving to be the thief. It appears that the money was not the property of the proprietors of the Anchor Line steamers, but belonged to Mr Brind, who, as the purser of one of the boats, was iv the habit of selling live stock for Mr Trask, Mr Max, and others, receiving a commission on the sales eirected. We congratulate these gentleman on the recovery of their money. A meeting of those interested in developing the coal products of Collingwood (and who iii Nelson is not?) is to be held at the Trafalgar Hotel to-morrow evening, wheu much interc-stiug and useful information will be afforded. The uew Sunday schoolroom in connection with the parish of Christ Church is to be opened this evening, when the members of the congregation and others are invited to attend. The members of the Standing Committee appointed to watch over the interests of the district in the matter of railway extension met yesterday, and agreed to forward the following telegram to the Minister for Public Works re his recent letter:—" Your letter of 2nd does uot say when tenders will probably be invited for further section of railway out of Amberley to Cook Strait vote, nor length of section. People here want to be assured that, vote will be made a reality, and that contracts for entire thirteen and half miles extension will be entered into before the end of financial year, otherwise great dissatisfaction. Please telegraph length of section out of Amberley to Cook Strait vote for which specificationshave beenordered, and probable date when tenders will be invited for same." Mr John 11. Mabin reports that at the sale yesterday, of Mr H. C. Bullard's property and furniture there was a good attendance. The property realised £!45, and the furniture and effects satisfac tory prices. To-day he sold at Messrs Johnstone Brothers Hematite Works, Waimea Road, by order of the N. Z. Hematite Company, the engine aud winch for £57 10s; battery, £5 15s.
