The new Sunday schoolroom which has just been completed for the parish of Christ Church is to be opened to-morrow evening by the Bishop of the diocese, and it is hoped that the parents of the children attending the school and the members of the congre gation generally will respond to the invitation to be present and attend in large numbers. A POBLicmeeting is to be held at Richmond on Saturday evening tor the purpose of discussing the advisability or otherwise of bringing the Counties Act into force iv the County of Waimea. It will be seen by our report of the meeting held in Motueka which appears elsewhere that the residents in that district have unanimously pronouncedagainst it.
Yesterday afternoon the alarm of fire was raised in Richmond for the first time since the formation of the local Volunteer Fire Brigade. It turned out to he one of the stacks belonging to Mr Charles Canning, and in eight minutes the Brigade were on the spot with the small engine which they are at present using, Lieut. Fairey being in command. The stack on fire was a small oue a few yards to the eastward of the two large and valuable haystacks lately harvested, and the wind at the time, although light, was blowing the flame 3in their direction. By the efforts of the Brigade who were ably assisted, though not interfered with, by the public, the two larger slacks were saved intact, and also a portion of the small one. The loss to Mr Canning is about £12, but had there not been some provision for extinguishing fires the two larger stacks must have gone, which would have entailed a loss of from £250 to £300. The origin of the fire is not known Attention is directed to Mr John Coutts' new advertisement, which appears on the next page.
