CITY COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of the City Council was held last night. Present, all the members except Cr Hounsell.

A letter was received from the Secretary to the Marine Department stating that the Government did not intend lo take any action with reference to the election of a Harbor Board, but that they would leave the Council to act as they thought best. The letter also stated that the Harbor Master and Pilot's establishment would have to be maintained by the Board, to whom the pilotage fees would be paid. A letter was received from the Wallsend (Collingwood) Coal Company asking on what terms the Council would allow .them the use of the small jetty near the gasworks. His Worship the Mayor and Cr Levien were of opinion that they might be allowed to use the jetty free of cost, but after some little discussion it was resolved, on the motion of Cr Little, to let it to them at £20 a year. Letters from Mr Lightbaud and Mr Blackett complaining that the footpath on the north side of Nile-street east was overgrown with weeds, and from Father Garin calling attention to some damage done by the Brook street stream by the last flood, were referred to the Public Works Committee. A letter was received from Mr Lambert asking what the Council intended to do with regard to the damage sustained by his property during the late rains. Cr Harley as chairman of the Public Works Committee

said that it was not a matter for the Council to deal with at all.

Cr Crewdson pointed out the necessity for making some provision for carrying off the storm water from Russell-street.

Cr Harley having stated that he had heard of an instance of a gas meter which did not register at all it was resolved that the Surveyor and Collector be instructed to look into the matter. Cr Crewdson called attention to the fact that no advertisement bad appeared recently regarding the sale of certain sections on account of the non-payment of rates which was to take place on Saturday, the 11th inst. The Town Clerk was instructed to see into matter. On the motion of Cr Harley it was resolved that application should be made to the Government for all public reserves to be handed over to the Council.
