CRICKET MATCH.

WELLINGTON UNITED CLUB V. NELSON STAR CLUB. This match came off in Victory Square yesterday, and resulted in favor of the visitors. Bolton acted as captaiu for the Stars and Kutchen for Wellington. The latter winning the toss decided to take the field. Bolton and Hood were the first to represent the Stars, McGirr and Dryden being the bowlers. After a few runs had been made Bolton was clean bowled by Dryden. White followed, only to see Hood meet with a similar fate. This seemed to strike terror into the hearts of the Stars, for one after the other wenfc in only to return immediate) v. The innings closed for the miserable total of 20, Dryden having cleaned bowled six, and M'Girr tbree. The Stars were quickly in the field, and the Wellingtonians sent in M'Girr and Crowther to the bowling of J. Wigzell and C. Halliday. In his second over Wigzell clean bowled Crowther for a duck's egg. The rest of the batsmen did not trouble the field very much, with the execution oi Keefe, who played well for his 13, and who was beautifully caught by J. Wigacll in the slips. The innings closed for 42, of which 15 were extras. C. Halliday and Hood were the firsfc to go in for the Stars in their second innings, and they had just appeared to have collared the bowling when Hood was run out. All the others seemed afraid of hurting the ball except J; Wigzell who opened proceedings by sending one into the pavilion. His innings was by far the besfc of the day. Hale and Foote were Loth splendidly caught by Keefe at long on, he having to run a long way each time to reach the ball. The last wicket fell for 38 runs, leaving Wellington 17 to get to win. McGirr and Kutchen went in first, and were both immediately bowled for duck's eggs, the former by Halliday aud the latter by Wigzell. Crowther and Keefe were now in, andseveral maiden overs followed, the bowling being very good. At last Crowther sent Halliday to square leg for five, making the hit of the day. The rain which bad been threatening all day now set in, and after waiting 3ome time in hopes that ifc would clear up, the game was decided by the first innings in favor of Wellington. For Wellington the bowling of McGirr and Dryden was good, and the fielding all round excellent. Halliday and Wigzell for the Stars bowled fairly, and if they had only acquitted themselves a3 well in the firsfc innings as they did in the second the result of the match would have been far different. Ou the whole the Stars were not up to their usual form, especially in fielding. Both teams seemed weak in batting. The only circumstance which occurred to mar the day's proceedings was a slight dispute with one of the umpires. Mr Topliss having "no balled " McGirr in two successive balis, he (McGirr) disputed his decision. Now, of course, no bowler likes being "no balled," stilt McGirr was the only one on his side who objected to the umpire, and ifc was most uncncketlike conduct on his part not to accept the ruling particularly where all his side thought him in the wrong. Mr Topliss retired from the ground and his place was taken by Mr Andrews. Mr Coles acted as umpire for the Stars. With the exception of this disagreement the match passed off pleasantly. It is only fair to the Star Club to state that several of their best players did not take part in this game, they having refused to play ia a Club match against Wellington on account of the manner in which the Wellington Cricket Association treated them as regards the Interprovincial Match which had been arranged to take place yesterday. The following are the scores. Wellington United Clbb,

The ChronicU speaks thus of the fallenthrough cricket match between Wellington and Nelson :— The public will learn with considerable regret that the long-talked of cricket match between Wellington and Nelson has dropped through. . This decicision has been arrived at owing to the fact that Wellington has to send a" team to the Wairarapa during the holidays, and it was thought that there would not be another team obtainable of sufficient strength to compete against Nelson. Considering that the population of this city is about four times as great as that of Nelaon, the abandonment ot this match does not redound to the credit of Wellington fenights of the willow.
