Melancholy Reflection.— The sluggard is bidden to go to the ant; but alas ! how often he goes to his uncle. — Fun.
A late London paper gives this : The magistrates at Dunmow have sent a woman named Margaret Chapman to prison for seven days for picking ears of wheat, valued at Id., from a field.
A Melbourne paper asks :— What has become of Dr. Slade and the spiritualists ? *T stand upon this state," said Professor Baldwin on Saturday night, " and I tell you that Slade is an impostor ; I brand him publicly as a humbag:, and challenge him to the test. All his manifestations are the result of trickery, and when he takes your, money and tell 3 you otherwise, he swindles you. Let him come upon this stage, and if I do not duplicate all his tricks, I will forfeit a hundredpounds, lam responsible for what I say, and if he feels aggrieved let him enter imf action against me in a court of law for slander." Again we ask, where is Dr. Slade? If he is content to hide himself, and lie under this stigma till Professor Baldwin baa quitted the city, he must not bo surprised if the public endorse the sentiment that he is an impostor and a humbug. JThe doctor's reputation as a great spiritualist seems likely to be short lived.
The Australasian Colonies hare lately been. engaged in taking census of their position, and statistics have been published comprehending the last five years. The increase of population in the different colonies have been as follows :— New Zealand, 121,676; New South Wales, 101,937; Victoria, 70,296; Queensland, 56,394; South Australia, 38,789Tasmania, 2,937; Western Australia, 2,077. These figures show the gros3 numbers added to the population in each colony, and the rapid increase of New Zealand is the more striking when the percentage of increase is regarded. Within the five years New Zealand" has almost doubled her population; Queensland increased 38 per cent; South Australia, 20 .per cent; New South Wales, 19 per cent; Victoria, 9 per cent. The progress of this. colony in every respect has been much more rapid than that of her neighbors, arid as public works are proceeded with, and our resources become discovered and tested, a conviction prevails that daring the next five years we may as signally outstrip the other colonies of the group as we have done during the last five.— N.Z.
