The Zealaudia is ready for sea with a cargo of colonial produce, including CO tous of Oamaru flour, on board, valued at over £100,000. The captain finds great difficulty in obtaining seamen, who appear to have come to some understanding to stand out for very high wages. It is probable the vessel will be detained in consequence. The men refuse to accept £6 per month, .Judgment was given to-day in the Southminsler enquiry. Tbe Court held that the loss of the ship was attributable to the set of a flooa tide on the coast of which the master Had no knowledge, and regarding which there appears a note on the Admiralty Chart stating there is no tide. It was thought that the ship might have been saved if the anchor was let go m 25 fathoms, but with the offlug the snip bad and the wind, the master wos justmed in keeping his course which Would have carried him clear but for adverse circumstances. It was thought that all doe precautioa and diligence was exercised i>v the master, who was oa deck nearly the whole stances the Couri .did not consider that the certificates of the master and his officers should be retained. The Court directed the attention of the Government to r ».e. incorrect information (according to Captain Eraser's evidence) in the charts published by the Admiralty ia 1857 and 1870 and uow hi use. The Government, in replying to the Benevolent Society, as to their refusing to undertake the distribution of charitable aid state that the distribution of relief by the police must cease on the Ist January. The amount they usually distribute is about £700 per annum. The Agent-General telegraphs under date London, December 6, that the ship Wellington has sailed for Port Chalmers with 332 immigrants, and the Warwick with 201 passengers for Nelson and Wellington. Arrived-ship Otaki, with a good number of passengers, but no Government immigrants. The Zealandia's cargo for London consists of about 5000 bales of wool, 600 sack3 of flour, 172 casks of tallow, 287 cases of preserved meat, and other articles of produce and sundries. A meeting convened by tbe Mayor will shortly be held for considering the question of the introduction of Chinese into the Colony.— Mr Sheehan is expected in Wellington in a few days, and Mr Stout back from the South about Christmas time.— Further changes are about to be made in the police, Sergeant Smith being about to be transferred' to Dunedin. This is said to be in consequence of some unpleasantness between Detective Farrell and Ibe rest of the police, who are scarcely upon speaking terms with him. Attention having been drawn to the matter in Court and in the newspapers, the Government commenced an enquiry into the cause yesterday. The proceedings, however, are private.— The Times ventures to think that Mr Wood, of Mataura, will get into a difficulty by accepting a nomination to the Legislative Council until twelve months have elapsed nfter he has ceased to be a member of the House of Representatives. ChbisxChtjrch, Tuesday night. A jockey named M'Conkey was kicked in tbe breast on Monday by one of Mr. Redwood's horses, and euw lies in a critical condition. The people of Akaroa have invited the Hons. John Hall, W. Robinson, E. Grey, and Mr Montgomery, M.H.R., to a banquet on the Bth January in recognition of their services in connection with the Akaroa railway. Some large atones were found on the line near Flaxtou last night, evidently with the intention of wrecking the train. Fortunately they were seen and removed in time. The Bendigo Gas • Company of Victoria have accepted the tender of the Brunner Coal Company to supply them with three thousand tons of coal per annum, at an advance of 4s per ton on what Newcastle coal could be delivered at Bendigo for. The Public Works Department are about to commence the survey of the branch line of railway to Catlin's |River, and will also shortly call for tenders for the first section of Otago Central Eailway.
