TownQierk.) — ; — — — ■ - - -■;■ j'■ [advertisement.]'-'' '.-' ; "' I} j To the Editor of tue ''Evening MAti..* • SIR,— A letter appeared in the Colonist. oi the 30th ultimo, which if allowed to pass uncontradicted is calculated to do me serious injury. The writer, "Pro Bono Publico,',' desires to deprive my house of :. the license, | which with the exception of the last quarter, . has been granted to it for 21 years, and in his anxiety to gain his end does not confine himself strictly to the truth. He says that j soai6 residents have signed; my petition for the re-granting of the license against their own consciences, and simply because they had not the courage to say no, . This is not the case. All who signed did so willingly,, many of them unsolicited. The reason why the license was lost was because my late tenant, Mr Talbot, suffered the house to fall into a terrible state of dilapidation, an^ would not allow me to enter to put it in order. Since I : have regained possession, I have almost rebuilt\the house, is now as good as new, and as no complaint has ever been made against it "excepting on account of Talbot allowing it to get into disrepair, I think it very hard that an attempt should now be made, without good cause, to^deprive me of a considerable portion of my means of living. "The other, house is two and a half miles distant, so tbat it cannot be said tbat the two public-houses are in too close proximity to one another ' . / lam, &c., y >~ \ JAMES FOWLER.: Decemberd, 1878.- 4162— 1p
