The New Zealander says that Mr Wood, the member for Mataura, is to be called to the Upper House, and that Sir William Eitzkerbert will be offered the Speakership of the Upper Chamber. The K.M. Court has been occupied all the moruing over the case of McElwain who is charged with having wilfully set fire to one of his houses. The case will scarcely be concluded to day. It is thought the prisoner will be committed. The ship Otaki, from London, is at the Heads. Later. The M'Elwain case is concluded. Some very strong evidence having beeu brought forward the prisoner was fully committed for trial. Bail was allowed, the prisoner in £500, and two sureties of ££50 each. Bluff, Tuesday. The Arawata arrived at 5.30 p.m. yesterday. She left Melbourne with the Suez mail on the sth, at 5.15 p.m., with G3 saloon j and 50 steerage passengers - 340 tons of cargo, aud 20 horses. She experienced fine weather. Passengers for Nelsou— Captain ] and Mrs Garcia and family (2) aud servant, | Messrß. Crosbie and Robinson, and 3 iv the steerage } also 40 tons cargo. ] Napieb, Tuesday, j In the Supreme Court in the case of a \ man named Charles Stewart, charged with stealing jewellery in a registered Postoffice packet addressed to Charles Stuart, the ] jury found that the prisoner received the packet without felonious intent, but afterwards retained it with felonious intent. Judge Gillies ruled that was a verdict of not guilty under the section of the Act under which the prisouer was indicted. Had he been indicted under the 46ih section instead of the 41sfc the finding of the jury would amount to a verdict of guilty. It might be said that there was a failure of justice through the prisoner beiog wrongly indicated. There is another charge against the prisoner of detaining a letter after its being demanded from him. The Helen Denny sails for London today with 3552 bales of wool, six bales of hides, 23 casks of tallow, and one case of effects valued at £G8,131 7s lOd. ] Auckland, Tuesday. The brigantine Meg Merrilies arrived'afc 6 o'clock last evening from the Islands. Considerable excitement was caused when ifc became known that Captain Moller, wellknown in Auckland, had been murdered several weeks ago, and that Macarthur and Co.'s trader Thomas Reynolds .was arrested charged with the crime. The circumstances are alleged to be as follows :— The morning i after the brigantiue arrived at Butavalava they began taking in copra for McArthur and Co. The Captain and Reynolds could not agree. Captain Moller went ashore for the purpose of bringing off trade. Reynolds was walking about on the shore with a gun loaded with shot, and when the captain was about to take a cask of beef away Reynolds said, "If you touch that you are a dead man." He then fired at Captaiu Moller, and the shot took effect in his left arm The vessel proceeded to the Marshall Group to find a doctor, and next morning the Captain was taken ashore to the American Mission, where he expired in great agony. Reynolds was arrested after the shooting by Messrs Brever. Disney, and Grant, brought to Auckland and handed over to the police. He j will be charged at the Police Court to-day. On the arrival of the brigantine Captain Moller's wife, who was of course ignorant of his death, met the vessel in the stream, and there was a most harrowing scene. j Timaru, Tuesday, j Yesterday Messra Jones, Hart, and Wilkie held an important large sale of wool, tallow and ekins.
