Madame Cora and Vnl Vose's first appearauce on their present visit to Nelson attracted a crowded audience to the Theatre Itoyal last night, when Madame sustained her well earned reputation aa a remarkably clever conjuror, and surprised the audience by her numerous tricks, all of which were performed with a quickness and apparent ease that added much to their attractiveness. The second sight business was so accurately done, and the answers to questions to which it seemed almost impossible that the lf.subject " could reply, were given so quickly that it was pronounced by all present to be a marvellous exhibition. Of Val Vose it is needless to speak, for.he Is well-known in Nelson as the cleverest ventriloquist twho ever visited the place. The conversation apparently carried on by puppets, which are so well manipulated as almost to make the audience believe that the words Uttered- actually poured from their lips, were amusing to a degree, and were greeted with shouts of laughter irom the audience. The " Couch of the Angels," m which a lady is setin, to all appearances, floating in the air was really a very pretty scene indeed, and: was rendered more so than it otherwise would have been by being illuminated by the lime light. During the evening there was a liberal distribution of gifts, some of which were of considerable value, the principal one beiug a handsome tea and coffee service. There will be another performance to-night with a change of programme We are requested to state that the prizes awarded at the late Horticultural Show may be obtained on application at Mr Fell's office. The amount of entrance money taken at the doors during the two days the Show was open was £30 7s 6d, exclusive of that paid for family tickets. The Rev R. Bavin will deliver a lecture, which should prove an exceedingly interesting one, on the "History of the English Bible" at the Wakefleld Choral HalUthis evening. A novelty was to be seen in Nelson this morning in the shape of a locomotive engine travelling through the streets. This was the one recently imported for Messrs Hqldaway Brothers, of which we gave a full account the other day. It moved along apparently with the greatest ease at the rate of about four miles and hour, and steered with such precision that it could be turned in little more than its own length. Prom a gentleman who met it on the way out to the Waimea we learn that it climbed the hills without any difficulty' whatever, rind by means of a powerful brake was. made to descend as slowly as was desired ' There 'is no doubt that it will be in great demand in the Waimea this season. '.'.,' Siiakeiiolderb in the Roding' .ltiver Copper Mining Company are requested to attend a special meeting to be held at the Council Chamber this evening for the purpose of electing a Committee of Management. The adjourned meeting of the Salvage Corps will be held at the Fire Brigade Room this evening at eight o'clock. The fruit 'crop is a complete failure this yearin the Hokitika District. Last ; season was a bad one for the gardeners, but this season shows signs, of being still worse. Several of the best gardens in the town have been completely '.stripped, by the/ boisterous weather, r ' ■V* jfl ;;
