According lo a public Notification from the Secretary of Custdms, fencing wire may be landed on payment of a deposit which will be rettsttied subsequently when the tariff comes Into operation. The notice reads as follows: — " As fencing wire cannot be warehoused, the Hon. the Commissioner authorises you to allow it to be landed Until deposit entry, and afterwards to be cleared by free entry as soon as the exemption in the new tariff becomes operative. Timaru, Thursday. The sea is gradually scouring the heach and the reclaimed land north of the Mole. The fire in Geraldine bush iB still burning and is gradually approaching the township. No correct estimate of the damage can yet be made. Messrs Whitakers, Barkers, Postlewaite, McKenzie, Martins, and Gisbons have suffered, and besides the loss of Goverr> ment bush, a large quantity of stacked firewood has been consumed. Chbistchubch, Thursday. Another bear garden scene took place in the City Council last evening, when the Mayor and Councillors Wilson and Ick were the principal parties concerned. The lie was freely given and taken, and Councillor Wilson, when addressing the Mayor, said, " Oh well you are not much." It bas been resolved to construct a new bridge over the river at a probable cost of £1300. Mr John Bryan, the well-known theatrical agent, will shortly visit New Zealand with Mr Wybert Reeve, the comedian. The nominations for Mayor have closed with only two candidates, the present Mayor and ( ouncillor Ick. Charles Morgan committed suicide last evening in a shanty in the rearof the Collins Hotel by hanging himself. Great determination was shown by the deceased in carrying out his object. The cause of the rash act is not known.
