The election of County Councillors in the Ridings of Wai-iti and Wangapeka, the only ones in the. County of Waimea in which there were contests, took place yesterday with the following results : — Wai-iti : J. Shephard, 17 ; A Drunimond, 11. Waugapeka : W. H. Phillips, 35; R M'Rae, 25. A meeting of those who received invitations to take part in forming a Salvage Corps will be held at the Fire Brigade Hall to-night for tbe purpose of electing officers. We have been requested to remind our readers that to-nigbt at 630 there will be a tea meeting in the Congregational Church, and that a friendly conversational meeting will follow at 730, when subjects interesting to tbe church and congregation will be discussed. At the Oddfellows' Hall at Wakefieid on Monday last, one guinea was collected for the Nelson Aid Society, and forwarded to the Treasurer, by the Rev C. Moon. At the request of Mr Bettany we correct an error which appeared in our yesterday's notice of his new wool scouring works. Mr Bettany is the sole proprietor, his son nofc being in partnership with him as ,was stated by mistake. A capital photograph of Messrs N Ed wards and Co.'s bonded store in Bridgestreet, taken after the late fire, has been shown to usjby Captain Lightfoot, who is sending copies to the different centres in the colony, in order to show what can be done by the Nelson Brigade with the supply of water at its command. The Jphotograph, which is very clear and distinct, was taken by Mr Bloch We call attention to the dramatic entertaiument advertised by Mr Thornton for to morrow night, when Miss Amy Thornton will take her benefit. This young lady has constituted herself smch a favorite with the theatre-goiug people of Nelson, that upon such an occasion and with so excellent a programme there should be a real bumper house.

Duff, who for eight years has been the Surgeon Superintendent of the Totara district Hospital at Ross, in Westland, ha 3 removed to Nelson with the intention of practising his profession here. Previous to his leaving Ross he was presented with a most complimentary testimonial By the President arid itieinfaers tff the Hospital Committee. Dr. Duff has had a good deal of military experience, having served through the whole of the Indiau mutiny, including the sieges of Delhi and Lueknow. Tiik Wellington Rowing Club, which is known to the public principally through the performances of the famous boat "Dolly Varden," has Collapsed. Some of the. young stock look very promising, and they will be heard of hereafter in other hands. . , A most determined case of suicide occurred Bn board the ship \Vait'oa in Wellington harbor tbe other day, when a seaman named Hart who had been drinking heavily cut his throat from ear to ear. The instrument with which he inilicted the wound was an old sheath knife, the blade of which, being constantly ground, had become as thin and sharp a3 the point of a penknife. This knife was evidentally plunged up to the hilt into the left side of the neck, as the man was lying on his back, for the blood spurted out in one thick stream, covering the side of the bunk near his head. Next the knife was drawn completely round, every artery ia the neck being severed. The total stiefl'th of the New Zeaiani Volunteer Force ia 5508 adults, and 2180 cadets: The North Island has 2834 adults enrolled, with 695 cadets ; ifl the South Island the adult strength is 2674, and the cadets 1576.
