To the Editor of the 'Evening Mail.'

Sir —ln your contemporary of this morning a writer signing himself "Nemo" is evidently annoyed at my coming forward as a candidate for the Mayoral chair, and says, "No sooner does one brewer annouuee his intention of vacating the Mayoral chair than another candidate connected with the same, line of business presents himself." I may state to " Nemo " and the electors generally that my address was in print before the present Mayor signified his intention to the Council of not contesting the next election; in the next place, lam not connected with any brewing firm in Nelaon, and have not been for years, and if lam elected I 3hall take that seat as independent of any party influence as any man in Nelson. "Nemo" alludes to my address as being " a stock one prepared for him before his last defeat." This remark speaks tor itself. My present address would look well in print when seeking tbe office of Councillor. Those who know me better than "Nemo" will give me the credit of knowing how to frame an address when one is required,' and the electors of Nelson would not be wanting were I to ask them again to elect me as Councillor; that election was lost by the over-sanguine-ness of my friends, and not that it was a want of confidence on their part. I am, &c, J. R. Hoopeu. Nelson, Nov. 14,1878.
