The Nelson Evening Mail. TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 1878.
The only case in the RM. (extended jurisdiction) Court this morning was that of Richmond and Earnicoat, Attorneys for the S.P.G., v. Goodall. — Action to recover £54, interest on money borrowed. Mr Fell appeared for the plaintiffs. Defendant did not appear. Judgment for plaintiff for amount claimed and costs. Ax accident occurred this morning at the railway reclamation works near the Steamboat Tavern to one of the men engaged there, who was knocked down by a fail of earth and had his leg broken below the knee. He was immediately taken to the Hospital, where every attention was paid to the unfortunate man. We understand that the movement set on foot to establish a Tire Salvage Corps in Nelson is progressing most satisfactorily, a large number of names having been sent in. A meeting for the purpose of formiug the corps is to be held on Thursday evening. The great sporting event of the Southern Hemisphere, the race for the Melbourne Cup, takes place to-day. - The attention of our readers is directed to the advertisement announcing the ■ last lecture of the series in connection with the Young Men's Christian Association, which i3 to be delivered in the Provincial Hall this evening by the Rev W. Rowse, who takes for his subject Milton's "Paradise Lost." As the Association is doing a really good work among the young men of the town it h well deserving of encouragement and sup- J port, and we trust that a crowded room will testify to the promoters that their efforts to do good are well appreciated. An amateur dramatic entertainment is in course of preparation with the view of giving Mr John Glover a complimentary performance in recognition of his services in connec- 1 tion with amateur theatricals in Nelson. For I several years pa9t Mr Glover has materially assisted in producing entertainments ;in Nelson, of which the proceeds have been devoted either to charitable purposes or in aid of j local institutions, and on every occasion he has been indefatigable in his exertions to ensure a perfect rendering of his performance combined with a result satisfactory to the object whose welfare was sought to be promoted by the entertainment. The proceeds of the entertainment organized by him for the benefit of the OddFellows' Hal! Building Fund and produced at the opening of the Theatre Royal netted the handsome sum of .£45 19s Gd. We predict that the bumper house Mr Glover fairly merits will be accorded him on his benefit night. The cricket match between the Cabmen and Carters will take place in the Botanical Reserve to-morrow afternoon, when some good amusement may be expected. The Nelson Brass Band will be in attendance to enliven the proceedings. Wickets will be pitched at half past one. The teams will meet at the Crown Stables at 1 o'clock, and drive over to the ground in the four-horse coach.
