It is said that during the recess^efforts will be made by the Government to extend the railway to To Aweamntu, also that a conference will be held here shortly between the Minister for Public Works and the beads of the Public Works aiid Railway Department, in connection with the works to be undertaken during the recess in accordance with the Railway Construction Act. The New Zealand 7 'hues says that Inspector Brougham, of Chiislchurcli, will be transferred to Wellington in place of Inspector Atcheson who goes to Nelson. When the Taupo was put on the patent slip last night, a considerable graze was found along her port bilges, several places being dented or slightly started. There was also some damage to the garboard streak plate where rivetted to the keel. Several of the plates are bent in between the ribs, but the damage as a whole was not sufficient to call for the detention of the steamer, and after coming off the slip she proceeded on her voyage South full of passengers. Auckland, Tuesday. The Government intend to cut up the Te Aroha block of Eroomhall celebrity to make the Thames Valley railway. A township of 2000 acres on the river will be marked oft: and the proceeds from this alone, it is expected, will defray the cost of constructing the line from the Thames river lo Hamilton. The balance of the block will be cut up into small farm sections, and will, it is believed, supply the requisite funds to continue the railway into Grahamstown. The work is to be carried out immediately. Gretto'.vn, Tuesday. The lion G. M. Waterhouse has forwarded a cheque for £4G to the Greytowu Institute for the purchase of books. The sum is a third of his honorarium which he has always distributed in this way.
