MAGISTRATES' COURT, RICHMOND.
SATURDAY, November 2.
[Before J. W. Bahnicoat and G. Talbot Esqs., J.J.P.] Lauceny. Anna Schroder was charged with stealing 1 dress, 1 dresa skirt, 2 aprons, and other articles of clothing, the property of Alexander Monro, of Richmond. Detective Ede prosecuted and Mr Bunny defended the prisoner" The evidence showed that the prisoner was a domestic servant in Mr Monro's employ and on leaving her situation on the 24th inst., articles of clothing were missed and a search warrant was obtained, and the clothing before mentioned was found in the accused's box. It was proved in crossexamination that Miss Monro had given the prisoner two dresses and a few other things. Mr Bunny called no witnesses, but addressed the Bench for the defence, pointing out that the evidence for the prosecution was of such a nature as to leave a very reasonable doubt in favor of the prisoner, and therefore the case should be dismissed. The Bench, after retiring for quarter of an hour, found the prisoner guilty, and sentenced her to 14 days hard labor in Nelson Gaol, the Chairman
I stating that had ft not been for her previous ! good character the sentence would have been i heavier.
