NELSON DIOCESAN SYNOD.
The annual session of the Synod was opened yesterday. At 4.30 p.m., the members of the Synod and a fair congregation of others assembled at Christ Church, where there was a full choral service, and a sermon was preached by the Rev. J. A. Newth,from the words " God is a Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth. At 7.30 the Synod met at the Masonic Hall, the Right Rev. the Bishop of Nelson in the chair. The following answered to their names :— Clergy : Yen. Archdeacon Butt, Revs. .7. C. Andrew, C. O. Mules, J. Leighton, J. A. Newth, C. Moon, J. P. Kerapthorne, T. S. Grace, and W. A. Whyte. Laymen: Messrs Acton Adams, Ashcroft, Barnicoat, Blundell, Boor, C. Hunter Brown, Boddington, Fell, T. Greenwood, J. M. Pierson, Spencer, E. C. G. Thomas, W. H. Turner, and B. West. A resolution proposed by the Rev. J. Leighton, inviting the Veu. Archdeacon Thorpe to take a seat in the Synod was carried by acclamation. His Lordship the President then read hia opening address, which will be found in the supplement published with to-day's issue. The report of the Standing Committee and other papers were laid on the table. The following sessional officers were appointed : —Mr Barnicoat, Chairman of Committee; Rev. T S. Grace, Clerical Secretary; MrW. H. Turner, Lay Secretary; Messrs "West and Spencer, auditors. Mr C. H. Brown asked the President why it was that the Holy Communion was not administered in the Church that afternoon according to custom and as announced. His Lordship said that as he should like to reply fully to the question he would prefer tbat notice of it should be given in writing. This was done. Other notices of motion were given, and the Synod adjourned at 9 p.m. The hours of meeting during the rest of the session will be 4 p.m. and 7.30 p.m.
