The Nelson Evening Mail. WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 30, 1878.
We have received the following telegram from Mr Richmond :— " Sixty thousand pounds for the railway extension passed the House last night, making the total for the Foxhill extension £85,000. Br a majority of one a resolution was slipped through the House yesterday afternoon to the effect that the next session of the Assembly should be held at Christchurch. As only two-thirds of the members were present, and the House was evidently .taken by surprise, it is not likely that Mr Shrimski'a resolution will be acted upon. ouk0 uk telegrams state that the Parliament is to be prorogued tomorrow, when one of the most barren and unsatisfactory sessions for which the country was ever called upon to pay will be brought to a close. The report of the half-yearly meeting of the Bank of New Zealand, which discloses a most prosperous state of affairs, will be found in our telegraphic columns. The anniversary tea meeting in connection with the .Richmond Wesleyau Church will be held in the Agricultural Hall this evening. We were yesterday shown a nice little parcel of gold, consisting of 90 ounces, brought down by Mr Green from the Tadmor, where there are still a few men at work, all of whom are doing well. The first cargo of coal from the Wallsend Company's mine at Collingvvood arrived here yesterday afternoon in the Standard, consigned to Mr Burford, who is the agent here for the Company. It is free from shale, and ia the finest sample of coal we have seen from that district. The day is not far distant when it will supersede Newcastle coal. As there is a general feeling that Saturday will be an iuconvenient day for a public holiday in celebration of the Prince of Wales' Birthday, a petition to His Worship the Mayor is in course of signature asking him to proclaim Mouday the Ulth of November a holiday instead of Saturday the 9th. We haye no doubt that the course proposed will
I/e acceded to, if it is shown to be the general wish. An inquest on the late fire will be held at the^ Trafalgar Hotel to-morrow at 2 p.m. Tiik Harmonic Society having decided upon giving the favorite cantata " The Ancient Mariner," at their next concert, a full attendance is requested at the practice to morrow eveniug. Tiikre was a good attendance at the Theatre Royal last night on the occasion of the repitition of the Colleen Bown, both the front seats and the gallery being well filled. The acting was in some instances much better thau on the previous eveniuas, the singing was excellent, and the water cave scene perfect. Mr Thornton aud those who acted with him deserve the thanks of the public for supplying them with such a treat. The Diocesdu Synod will be opene I by his Lordship the Bishop at the Masonic Hall this evening at 7.30.
