The case against {Stephen Simpson was dismissed, the evidence not being conclusive. Another baker for having uo scales on his premises to weigh bread, was fined 10s. Richard Walker, for fishing iv the River Avon, was mulcted in the costs of the ejise, and strongly cautioned not to repeat the offence. Tuesday. In the case of Hedlings v. the Mandeville Road Hoard, an action to recover damages for trespass, a verdict was for the plaintiff for £50. Mr A. D. Austin has heen appointed Resident Engineer of the Public Works Department for the district of Canterbury. The Government have appointed Mr John Ollivier. the District Auditor, to hold an enquiry iuto the claims for compensation for l.md taken for road diversion purposes by the late Provincial Government in Akaroa and other districts. Balclutha, Monday. The cash box extracted from the Post Office here on Thursday night was found this morning by the police in a waterhole close to the office. It contained upwards of £12 iv cash, and ahout £50 in cheques; £54 in cash is missing. It appears the cash box had never been locked nor placed in the safe on Thursday night. Invercargill, Monday. A destructive fire broke out ia Dee-street last night in the shop, also the residence, of Lorenson, tailor, a wooden building. Five buildings, besides the outhouses, were destroyed. The following are the insurances : — New Zealand, £125 on Lorenson's stock, £200 on Condon's stock and Union, £300 on Condon's house, stock, and furniture; Colonial, £200 on Miller's stock; National, £175 on Lorenson's stock; Phoenix, £100 on Condon's house. Yesterday was Hospital Sunday. The total offertories amounted to £104 15s lOd. The Episcopalians and Presbyterians contributed nearly half. Bltjtf, Tuesday. The Ringarooma arrived last evening having left Melbourne on the afternoon of the 16th, andHobarton on the evening of the 18th. She sails for Dunedin at 4 p.m. She brings no passengers for Nelson. Wellington, Tuesday. A smart shock of earthquake occurred here last night a few minutes before eleven. No damage of any kind is repotted. Westport, Tuesday. There were two smart shocks of earthquake last night at 10.48, the direction being nearly north and south. There was a dead calm at the time, followed afterwards by a northerly gale.
