Lawrence, Monday. A stable on the Greenfield estate, three miles from the Home station, was burnt to the ground Forty-two horses were in it, fo.'ty-one of which, with a large quautity of harness, were burnt to cinders.

Otaki, Monday. The Felix Stowe, of 500 tons, coal laden from Newcastle, went ashore at 4 am. yesterday, half a mile north of Otaki. The sailors say it was blowing too hard to shorten sail. A boat was lowered soon after the vessel struck, but broke away aud came ashore. It was found and manued by Maoris and half-castes, who safely landed the captain's wife and three seaman. The second boat with Captain Piggott and the rest of the crew capsized. The captain, mate, apprentice, and one seaman were drowned, the remainder being saved after many narrow escapes by the Maoris and half-castes, who behaved splendidly. The first boat brought a line ashore, which was useful in saving lives. The ship's papers are said to be lost. A terrific sea was breaking when the vessel went ashore, but she does not appear to be much injured. Pughley, the coach driver, and other Europeans deserve praise for their exertions in saving life. Auckland, Monday. At the South British Insurance Company's half-yearly meeting held this atternoon the report showed:~Premiums, £68,904, beicg an increase of £10,402 over the corresponding period of last year; total income, including £9575 brought forward, £84,925; losses, £36,584; reinsurances and expenses, £25,234; ba'ances to credit at end of half-year, £23,086, of which £1000 is carried to reserve fund, making it £70,000. A dividend was declared at the rate of 15 per cent per annum. Investments, £115,952; assets, £183,086. Chbistchurch, Tuesday. The total amount of the Beer duty collected in Christchurch since the financial statement was made is £1395 11s 9d, the the whole of which amount will be refunded by the Collector of Customs on Thursday next in consequence of the withdrawal of the Beer Duty Bill. Arrangements have been made to run special trains from Invercargill to Christchurch on tha occasion of the forthcoming races and Agricultural Show on the sth 6th 7th and 9th of November. At the preliminary taeeting re the floods in Otago yesterday only two gentlemen were present, Mr J. Ollivier and the Mayor. A telegram was received from the Mayor of Dunedin stating that it had been decided not not to go outside the province of Otago for aid. All the rivers have subsided, but a great dea! of damage has been done in various ways. Railway communication with Kaiapoi will probably be interrupted for a week. The damage to the Rangitata Bridge has been so far repaired that passengers can today cross on foot to meet the connecting traiu. Reeftox, Tuesday. A fire broke out here last night destroying five shops and premises. The fire was ariested before getting to Masters', wholesale ironmonger, who is insured. The others are not.
