JAt Manuka Flat, not very far distant from the Lyell, some good finds of alluvial gold have been made for some time past. It is said by those who know the locality that the flat only needs prospecting to prove its capability of profitably employing a large number of miners. This is ihe flat that Dr Hector once declared would prove the Ballarat of New Zealand. — G.R.Argus. ■ At present (says the Dunedin Herald) there are a large number of schools without teachers, owing to the fact in many instauces that not a single application has been forwarded for the vacant positious. The question was recently broughc under the notice of the Education Board by its secretary. From the discussion which followed, it appeared that there is no lack of applicants for schools where the salaries paid range from £200 to £300 a year; and that young men who have just finished their course of training are wanted to apply for coiintiy schools, at salaries rangiog from £130 to £150 per annum. Some of the members thought it would be advisable to advertise for such in the Australian Colonies.
