RIFLE SHOOTING.

I A rifle competition, for prizes raised by [ public subscriptions, took place at the Stoke range on Thursday last, between the members of the local division of the Stoke Rifles. The ranges and size of targets were:— 2oo yds, G x 4 target, Sin. bull's eye; 400 and 500 yds, 6x6 target. In the evening the Company, with about 50 of their friends met at the Public Hall, Stoke, and after the distribution of prizes to the successful competitors, the room was cleared for dancing, which was kept iip with unflagging interest, to the enlivening strains of the Stoke String Band, the intervals being filled up by some capital songs by local talent. Refreshments consisting of tea, cofEee, sandwiches, &c, were provided during the evening under the able management of Mr aud Mrs Hyde, to whom a vote of thanks was recorded for the time {and trouble they had taken in preparing the same. The Company separated at the beginning of the small hours, after having spent a very pleasant evening. The following are the scores made and prizes taken by each competitor: — Col.-Sergt. Doidge, 46, china set; Pvt. R. Kenning, 46, clock and pair vases, Sergt. Bradley, 45, album; Pvts. C. Ching, 43, teapot; J. Best, 40, watchguard; W. Doidge, 40, album; H. Ching, 39, half dozen cups and saucers and half dozen knives and forks; 11. Parker, 38, 1 dozen plates; J. Doidge, 36, workbox; 11. Hyde, 35, 3hirt, collars, tie; W. Norgate, 33, pair spurs; W. Condeli, 30, lamp and book; J. Norgate, 29, 5 pairs socks, A. Cresswell, 19, leg mutton, bottle wine, set studs; M. Ching, 15, pipe, pair spurs; T. Kenning, 15, pipe, scarf; G. Bove}', 4, doll and book.
