[PBKB3 AGENCY.] Timaru, Wednesday. Traffic was resumed on the Rangitata today, the through train from Dunedin to Christchurcb passing over safely. Yesterday afternoon, a boy named Hubbard had a narrow escape of drowning in a pit filled with mnd and water in the grounds of the Timaru public school, about four feet deep. He was playing with other boys when they took hold of him and threw him in The boy immediately sank, and the other ttoys ran away. The affair was seen by a pupil teacher, Martin Sheppard, who rescued the lad just in time. He was taken home gnd recovered.

A meeting of the shareholders of the proposed Temperance Hotel last night resolved to advertise for a site; 1800 shares are taken up, but the building will not be commenced until 5000 are allotted. New PLY-Moum, Thursday. A _ boy and man have been stopped by the Natives on the mountain road between the new township of Stratford and Katemare. The boy Taylor says the Natives threatened to shoot him if he proceeded. The nmu Stewart says he was also obstructed by the Natives and was afraid to go on. and therefore turned back. An explanation given of the affair here is that these Natives may possibly have been some of the parties out in search of Hiroki, and they may have warned the man ana boy that the murderer was about and would probably shoot them if they went on. The steamer Waipara has not yefc shown up, having been abseut several days, and uneasiness is beginning to he felt with regard to her. The Lioness goes in search of her to the Southward to-morrow. The schooner Dunedin spoke the Waipara some days ago short of coal. Port Chalmers, Thursday. Arrived : ship Invercargill, 82 days from Glasgow, with 377 immigrants-, all well. Duxedin, Thursday. The Professional Board of the Dunedin University recommend the Council to refuse their assent to the proposal of the Presbyterian Synod to found a Chair of Moral Philosophy and Political Economy, on the ground that it would not merely "be superfluous, but prejudicial to the best interests of the_ University, as it could not fail to give rise to an impression throughout the colony that it was intended to subserve sectarian or ecclesiastical purposes.
