The Nelson Evening Mail. WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 2, 1878.
We unintentionally created quite a scare a short time ago by publishing the Registrar General's report on vital statistics, which showed that for the month the death nrte at Nelson had been higher than at any of thcother places from whence returns were received. To those who were thus alarmed it may be reassuring to learn that for the month of August Nelson stands lowest on the black list, the proportion of death to the 1000 of population huving been only -ir,, Of oonrso
these monthly returns are valueless when miren by themselves, and in order to derive any really useful information from them they must be examined for a period of some years. The total number of deaths in the boroughs of Auckland, Thames, Wellington, Nelson, Christchutch, Dunedin, and Hokitika during tho month of August was 105, and of these 07 Avere children under 3 years of age, and 14 of persons over 6,3. .
