! It; is proposed to start a temperance V hotel in Christchurch by means of a limited liability company, with a capital of £10,000 in that number of £1 shares. Amongst the names on the provisional directory is that of the Hon. "Wm Eox. The directors state that "the object of the proposed company is to provide, in some couvenienfc and prominent position in Christchurch, a temperance hotel on a large scale which shall afford to travellers and others the best possidle aceomodation, as regards both board and lodging, at the lowest remunerative prices. The promoters have iu view the inestimable boon which will be conferred on the country by the establishment of an hotel which, by the attractive character of its surroundings, will go far to counteract the many dangers and temptations which beset the bars and taprooms of licensed houses. With this end in view, special attention will be paid to the providing of a comfortable reading-room, airy in summer, and well warmed and well lighted in winter, and of amusements of various kinds, including draughts, chess, billiard and bagatelle tables,&e. Separate rooms, arranged with every attention to comfort, will be provided for ladies. It is thought that the number of total abstainers from intoxicating drinks, and of persons who would seek such a place of resort iu preference to the ordinary hotels and public-houses, has increased to such an extent in town and conntry, as to afford a fair prospect of a good return on the outlay which will be incurred in the erection and fitting up of such an establishment as is proposed. Should this undertaking be attended with success, the company may possibly extend its operations by establishing, or assisting to establish, similar places of public entertainment in other centres of population." i i -- i I.
