The Nelson Evening Mail. SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 23, 1878.
The Customs receipts for the week endiuo* to-day were £415 lis 4d. ° Ax advertisement appears elsewhere inviting those who take au interest iu the construction of a trunk line of railway through the island to meet at the Council Chamber on Monday afternoon at three o'clock. The object of the nieetiug, we understand, is to form a Committee for the purpose of collating from the reports laid before the Inland Communication Committee such information as may be required to strengthen the hands of our members in demanding thafc Nelson shall be included in the colonial system of railways. A serious accident occurred a few days ago at Collingwood to a man named AVilliam Smith, who was at work in the coal mino when a fall of earth and stones occurred, by which one of his legs was broken. He was brought over in the Lady Barkly last night, nnd conveyed to the Hospital. It is reported that another -iccident has occurred in the Wairoa river, passengers by the up train this morning having observed a spring cart with brokeu shafts in the middle of the stream. We have not been able to ascertain any further particulars. Ax entertainment, of which a Christmas Tree will be the leading foature, is to be given in the Stoke Public Hall on Monday the 14th October, the proceeds to be devoted to tbe St. Barnabas Church fund. The New Ztalander of Tuesday says :— " We yesterday inspected what appear to be some very rich specimens of copper ore, obtained from a recently discovered lode, near the Dun Mountain (Nelsou). The proprietors of the lease speak hopefully of the deposit, and wisely state their iutention of endeavoring to float a company to work it iu Melbourne, prefcring a city where Philosophical Societies are powerless to prevent capitalists judging of the value ot mining ventures according to their own unscientific ideas." Some specimens of the ore from this lode were recently sent to the Government Geological Department afc Wellington to be analysed, the result being that they were found to contain 23!) per ceut of metallic copper.
