The Nelson Evening Mail. WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 1878.
A telegram appears elsewhere stating that the recently opened southern railway 19 already producing beneficial results at Christchurch. Thia is but a foretaste of what is in store for us here for the next five years. News constantly arriving from other parts of the extent to which they are benefited by the extension of the railway system, to aid in which we are supplying our share of taxation, while our own advantages are limited to learning how the moie favored districts are progressing, we, thanks to the Minister for Public Works in Otago, remaining stagnant, if not retrograding. And all the time we shall be still further irritated by the consciousness that of all the towns in the colony there is not one that would advance with more rapid strides than Nelson if she were only brought into communication with the rest of the island, and so had fair play allowed her. A miscellaneous concert will be given by the Harmonic Society at the Provincial Hall to-morrow night. Tue Fire Brigade will hold their annual dinner at the Masonic Hall to-morrow evening, when a large party is expected.
