The Nelson Evening Mail. TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 24, 1878.
We are curious to learn what is thought by our members of Mr Macandrew's reply to their representations regarding the public works proposals. If they want to know the opinion of their constituents we can tell them in a very few words. It is that to the injury to be inflicted upon them by excluding them from all participation in the progress to be ensured to the rest of the colony by the extension of the railway system, has now been added the insult of taking them for fools. If our representatives had not been placed on their mettle before by the unjust treatment to which it is proposed that Nelson shall be exposed, we should imagine that there will be no hesitation on their parts now in resenting the insult offered to them and those whose interests are entrusted to their charge. There is this to be said, that in his answer Mr Maeandrew has given them a handle with which to work. He has admitted that the Government are sensible of the incompleteness and injustice of their original proposals, and such an admission should very greatly strengthen the hands of our members when, as we presume they will now do, they fight the matter out in the House.
We direct attention to Messrs Patterson and Co.'s auction sales at Wakefield tomorrow, at the Forest Inn at noon, and at the Choral Hall at 2 p.m.
A special telegram to the Pest dated London !9th inst says :— To the astonishment of Europe, the Porte announces its intention to sell to the highest bidder the whole of the Bulgarian dominions.
