The Nelson Evening Mail. MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 23, 1878. MR. MACANDREW'S REPLY TO THE DEPUTATION.
[From our own Correspondent.]
Wellington, Monday, 4 p.m. The Minister for Public Works replies that the Government have decided to include the continuation of the main line of railway from Amberley to Cook's Strait in their proposals for the sanction of Parliament this session. They cannot at present decide upon the best route or form even an approximate estimate of the probable cost, but the Engi-neer-in-Chief of the Middle Island railways shall, during the recess, personally examine the country to fix on such a route as shall best combine the various considerations, which must needs be kept in view in deciding this most important point.
