The Nelson Evening Mail. SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 1878.

A telegram received from Wellington to-day says that au answer to the Nelson deputation regarding the public works -was to be given by Mr Macandrew this afternoon.

The Customs receipts for the week ending this day were £449 16s Bd.

At the Magistrates' Court yesterday afternoon, Benjamin Langley, a seaman on board the Helen Deuny, was charged with using insulting language towards Captain Ruth. Extenuating circumstances were pleaded in the shape of a little unusual merry making on the occasion of the chief officer's wedding, in houor t of which event Benjamin had toasted his superior perhaps once, or it might have been twice, more than there was any occasion for, and in consequence had become a little oblivious of what was due to the captain. Fined £2 and costs £1 7s 6d, or in default fourteen days' imprisonment.

The usual civil sittings of the District Court will be held on Monday at 1 1 o'clock. The cases set down for hearing are Harley v. J. Sigglekow and Harley v. Wm. Sipglekow, in both of which Afr Acton Adams appears for the plaintiff. In the probate jurisdiction of the Court Mr Acton Adams is to move for probate, of the will of R. J. Durraut, and Mr Fell for that of James Nicol, to be granted to the executors respectively.

Tkk Church of St. Barnabas, at Stoke, will be re-opened to-morrow, when the Bishop will preach at 11 a.m.

A leotuue will be delivered in the Presbyterian Church to-morrow evening by the Kev P. Calder, who will take for his subject '• John Knox, and his Life Surroundings." The rev. gentleman is so well known as a lecturer that he is sure to have a large congregation.

The annual meeting ot the members of the Eire Brigade was held last evening, Capt. Lightfoot iii the chair. The balance sheet was read, and showed a balance to the credit of the Working Fund of £56 143 2d, and to the credit of the Members' Fund of £52 12s 2d. The election of officers for the enauing year resulted as follows:— Captain, W. Lightfoot, Lieutenant, C. Bird; Foreman Hook and Ladder Company, H. Wimsett; Foreman No. 1 Hose Company, J. Gay; Foreman No. 2 Hose Company, T. Rowling; Foreman Fire Company, P. Gowland; Treasurer, M'Conkey ; Secretary, E. Smallbone. An unanimous vote of thanks was accorded to Messrs Darby and Pannenter for the manner in ;which they had fulfilled their self-imposed duties as collectors. A petition was signed for presentation to the Government praying that free passes on the railway be granted to Fire Brigades on the occasion of Fire Brigade demonstrations and other business. A vote of thanks was unanimously passed to Capt. Lightfoot and the other officers for the efficient and zealous manner in which they had discharged their duties during the past year. It was decided to hold the annual dinner on Thursday next in the Masonic Hall.

" Citizen " writes expressing his surprise that the •' Fire Brigade " was omitted from the list of toasts at the Artillery dinner on Thurday. He thinks that so useful a body of men should have had at least that amount of respect showed to them.

Mr and Mrs Black, whose skill in teaching the piano and singing is well known in Wellington, proposes giving lessons here, commencing from the Ist of next month. It is requested that applications may be sent in as early as possible to the Mail Office.
