[press agency."] Christchurch, Thursday. The missing girl Doran has turned up safe at Sumner. The man Edwards, who was seriously burnt at Albury a few days ago, died in Christchurch yesterday from the injuries received. The prospectus of a New Temperance Hotel has been issued, capital £10,000 in 10,000 shares at £1 each. At the annual meeting of the United Cricket Club last night the suggestion was made to import a professional bowler, which the Association will be recommended to do. Mr W. J. Woolcoeks, who for some time past has represented the New Zealand Shipping Company at Lyttelton, has been appointed to a similar position at Invercargill. Wellington, Thursday. The Wellington sailed for Picton and Nelson at 1.30 p.m. Passengers :Mr Rowley, Miss Chapman and one in the steerage. A Maori war dance, with 50 aboriginal performers, passed off with great success at the Imperial Opera House last night, when hundreds were unable to obtaiu entrance. The Governor was present. The proceeds were originally intended to be handed over to the Benevolent Society, but as the latter objected to be benefited by such a performance, the takings, after defraying expenses, will be devoted to other charitable institutions. Auckland, Wednesday. The brigantine Active, just arrived from Samoa, reports that on the outward voyage, when about 120 miles to the east of Nukudaelel vast quantities of pumice stone were passed, and the shores of all the Ellice Islands, from Nukudaelel to Nukato and Noumea are thickly covered with it. It is no exaggeration to say that hundreds of tons have been thrown up on every island. Stumps of trees and thick bamboos with roots attached are thrown up on some of the islands. Early in May the brig Isabella Evans, from Sydney, called at Vaitapu, and there left a report that there had been some volcanic eruptions in the Society Group ; one report even says that Kaitea and Boiebora are destroyed and 2000 lives lost. There were also passed while beating back between Nukudaelel and Takiolo one malita tree about eighty feet long, one cocoanut tree, and four other gigantic forest trees, all evidently proof that the story of Captain Evans was probably only too true. Pumice stone began to arrive on the Ellice Islands about the middle of April, and continued till the middle of June. When first noticed there was no seaweed growth on the pieces, and the barnacles were but beginning in June to be plainly noticeable. There is no tract of pumice stone in the Union or Gilbert Groups, and the time of its arrival in the Ellice Group will be interesting to those who study the question of ocean currents. The John Williams left here again on the 14th instant for the Society Islands and Hervey Group. Rewi is expected to visit Waikato before March, as some of his tribe asked him to do so to settle some tribal matters. He has had some difficulty about his steamer, which was intended to open the Kawhia trade. It appears the Customs officials objected to the steamer running from Manukau because she had not conformed with the Customs rules, and red tape interfered, notwithstanding that such a gravely important question as the opening of Kawhia was concerned. Rewi telegraphed to Mr Sheehan, and early on Sunday morning the Commissioner of Customs telegraphed to Auckland to pass the steamer, so that no further difficulty in that respect will arise. Port Chalsiers, Wednesday. Sailed — Taranaki, for North. Passenger for Nelson— Mr Watts.
