Wellington, Saturday night. A deputation from the Chamber of Commerce waited on the Premier tc day representing the desirability of establishing a Sailors' Home here. The Chamber of Commerce and private citizens will subscribe, and he was asked if the Government would assist. Sir George Grey said the Government were most desirous to see Sailors' llome3 established in all the principal seaports, and intended placing a sum on the estimates to aid, and of this, £500 will be appropriated to Wellington. The management of these Homes is to be under officers of the Government, probably the harbor masters. The City of Sydney left San Francisco on the 2nd instant, her contract time, with the mails. The Australia having left Auckland on the 20th August, arrived at San Francisco on the 11th September, one day before her contract date. The Loan and Mercantile Agency report under date London, Sept. 12:-At the wool sales competition is decreasing and the market is weaker. The principal decline has been in medium, superior, greasy, and crossbred. The market for scoured is easier. The principal demand has been in medium and inferior washed. The leather mar ket is easier. Best sides, 9d. Monday. Arrived, the N.Z.S.S. Orari from London, 109 days from Gravesend. She had a fine weather passage with light winds. She brings equal to 33 statute adults, and a full cargo. CiißisxcnußCH, Saturday night. The grain market has undergone no change, and extreme dulness prevails. Wheat may be quoted at 4s, but there are no buyers except for absolute requirements. Oats are somewhat easier, for feed and milling 4s and4s2d; best brand of flour £10. There is an active enquiry for bran and sharps at late quotations; potatoes, £3 10s ; cheese and butter, unaltered; bacon and hams, from 7^d to Bd. There is to be telephonic communication between the Pilot Station at Lyttelton and the Lookout House. The Union Shipping Company have lowered their fares between Lyttelton and Port Chalmers. Monday. The story which appeared in the Wellington Post that the Governor and party had a narrow escape from a collision in the Lyttelton tunnel is officially denied by the authorities, who state that there was no possibility «r au accident. Two more skeletons have been found in the Port Hills. The earthquake on Saturday morning was plainly felt in the suburbs. Patea, Monday. The ketch Huon Belle is being temporarily repaired, and then goes to Lyttelton. There is a great want of laboring men throughout this district. Gisborxe, Saturday. Be the Waipa murder. At half past twelve last night the jury brought in the following verdict :— Thtit the said Hira Whakarau, on the 26th August 1878, on a terrace above the Waitaupo creek was found dead, there appearing marks of violence on and inside her body, the said marks being, in the opinion of the jurors, inflicted by Henare Pete and Peneamne, which caused her to die." They also made this presentment:-" That the action taken by the committee (Native) at Waiomatuina relative to investigating the cause of death of the deceased is worthy of the highest commendation and praise. The evidence taken before the said. Committee and re-taken at this enquiry has very much assisted the jurors in arriving at the verdict. The said jurors are ako impressed with the advisability that representation should be made to the Government that action may ai once be taken to prevent the wholesale traffic in spirituous liquors by unlicensed persons so close together in outlyingjdistricts such as where the offence was committed.
