The Nelson Evening Mail. SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 14, 1878.
Owing to a large number of advertisements coming iu at a late hour we are compelled to hold over until Monday our report of the City Council and other matter. A sharp earthquake shock, which was sufficiently severe to stop a clock and set jugs and basins rattling, was felt at about a quarter to five this morning. Ode Parliamentary telegram tc day is somewhat confusing, the report of a division on an amendment proposed by Mr Woolcock making that gentleman vote against his own motion. A fire occurred at Waimea West about two o'clock this morning, resulting in the total destruction of Mr John Kerr's house with all its contents. At the hour named' Mr Disher, who, together with a boy, was sleeping in the house, was awakened by the smell and crackling of fire, and found the whole kitchen in flames. He and the boy did all in their power to get the furniture out, but were only able to save a very small quantity. The house and furniture were insured in the Liverpool and London for £1000. An accident happened at the reclamation works near the Commercial Wharf this afternoon, when a man employed there received several nasty cuts on the head through some stones falling on him. He was immediately placed in a cab and conveyed to town, where his wounds were dressed.

The Committee of Management of the Nelson Aid Society held its usual monthly meeting dn Friday, i 3th ihstant. Four cases of distress have tjeen rfelifevec. during the l^ast nionth by the lady visitors, to the amount of £4 ss.— The Hon. Treasurer having been prevented from attending, the balance in the National Bank was not stated. —The Hon Secretary reported the receipt through A. McKellar Wix Esq. of £11 If s 6d from the Drimatic Amateurs.— The report of the Ladies' Committee contained the followiug well 'merited tribute to the late Mrs Crooke :— The Ladies' Committee desire to expiess their deep regret at the loss of Mrs Crooke, who has always been a moat active aud efficient helper in the work." The Committee of Management, with reference to this, passed unanimously the following resolution :—" The members of this Coriirnittet. cpneut with the Ladies' Committee in putting on record their regret at the loss sustained by the poor and sufferingin Nelson by the sudden removal by death of the late Mrs _ Crooke, whose kindness and Christian charity will long be remembered by the community. They also desire to express their sympathy with Mr Crooke and his family in their heavy bereavement."— A copy of this resolution was then sent to Mr Crooke.
