HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.

Wellington, Wednesday. The House resumed last night at 7.30. Major Atkinson with a view to expediting the business, as the session threatened to be a long one, suggested that the Honse should sit on Mondays, and that Wednesday or Thursday be made a Government business day. The Premier promissed to lefc the House know next day what the Government decided to do. The debate on the Land Tax Bill was resumed by Mr Pyke, who, although preferring much bolder measures of reform, still warmly supported all the Government proposals as an instalment. He favorably criticised the main principles of the Government measures and hoped the Government would proceed with them. Mr Wason thought the Government would not receive much opposition if they would agree to allow tbeir proposals to be amended iu Committee, so as to render them suitable and acceptable to the country, bufc if they persisted in forcing them he believed very serious opposition would spring up, not only in the House but in the coantry. Mr Curtis, although approving of the principle of the Bill, must oppose the second reading in consequence of the policy laid down in the Public Works Statement, which was a marked departure from the original Public Works policy, and which inflicted a great injustice on all the northern portion of the South Island by compelling them to contribute for the construction of railways in more favored parts of the Colony. The debate was adjourned uutil next dav at 7.30. ' The House adjourned at 9.15.
