The Nelson Evening Mail. SATURDAY, AUGUST 30, 1878.
A correspondent signing himself "Verity" complains that the Band charged £5 for their services at the late dramatic entertainment in aid of James Lucre, aud thinks that the fact should be made known, so that they may not get the credit of having performed a charitable action wheii they are not entitled to it.
Ti»e absence of European telegrams today is accounted for by the fact that the lort Darwin line is interrupted north of Port Augusta. The Customs receipts for the week ending this day were £438 19s iod. The amount collected for the month of August was £2573 10s (Id, made up as follows:— Spirits, £819 5s 4d ; Cigars, £47 3s 9d; Tobacco, £199 3s 9d; Wine, £92 0s 4d; Eeer, £32; Tea, £353 Us Cd; ColTee, £13 4s ; Sugar) £33 0 8s Id; Weight, £109 ss4d; Ad valorem, £217 9s 9d; Other duties, £122 5s 2d; Other receipts, £153 Is 4d; Gold, £83 8s 2d; Total £2573 10s Gd. A teachers' prayer meeting will be held in the Y.M.C.A. Booms to-morrow morning at seven o'clock. A sermon- to young men will be preached by the Kcv K. Bavin ia the Wesleyan Church to-morrow evening. The Mayor has called a meeting for Tuesday night next for the purpose of considering the proposal of Mr Macendrew to deprive the Nelson province of any benefit to be derived from the public works of the colony during tbe nc-xt five years. We hope to see a large attendance of country residents, and would suggest that arrangements be made for laying on a special train for the occasion. The Raphael Family, assisted by ;Mr and Miss Thornton, will give a performance at the Theatre Koyal to-night. Every now and then facts come to our knowledge which show conclusively how sound is the traiuing given at Nelson College, and that lads who leave that institution for EnglandACan hold their own against competitors orcd in the mother country. It seems that at Clifton College four open Scholarships are offered, two of the value of £50, and two of £25 each. Arthur Atkinson, late of Nelson College, has won a £50 scholarship, tenable as long as he remains at the College. Maurice Richmond, also au old Nelson Collegian, has won an exhibition of £30 at University College, London, for general Mathematical proficieny. He has also carried off two prizes for Physics and Dynamics. Tub concert given at the Provincial Hall last night, in aid of tbe Trinity Church fund was a complete success, both as regards the performance and the pcuuiary result, the hall being filled with au audience who were not all sparing of their expressions of satisfaction and appreciation. The first part consisted o£ some well chosen selections from Oratorios and Masses, and the second of secular music, many of the song3 being warmly encored. Mr Sealy, the organist of the Church, is to be congratulated on the success that attended his perserving efforts, and his co-workers earned the thanks of their audience for the very pleasant evening they afforded them.
