GLADSTONE. London, July 28. — Ths Carlton Club gave a banquet last vi _ht to tbe British plenipotentiaries to the Congress. Five hunlred Peers and commoners were present. Lord Beaconsfield, in replying to a toast, awarded Lord Salisbury the greater* share of merit in the labours at Berliu. Ha defended bis conduct toward Greece, saying he had counselled Greece to abstention, and the facts proved tbat Greece had obiained more than ihe revolted principalities, wbich had lavished blood aod treasure. He passed an eulogium oa the present Sultan, who, throughout, was desirous of acting in a conciliatory manner to Greece. Lord Beacoosfield maintained that by the Convention with Tuikey wo had diminished, not increased, our responsibility; that neither the Crimean nor tbe last war would havo occurred if England had epjken out firmly. Repelling the assertion of Mr Gladstone that the Turkish Convention was aa insane Convention, he spoko of Gladstone as a sophistical rhetorician, inebriated with the exuleranee of his own verbosity and egotistical imagination.
