HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.

. " elusgton, Thursday. During the evening sitting last night," Mr Hodgkmson moved the second readiug of the Deceased Wife's Sister Marriage Bill very briefly. Messrs Barff, Bowen, and Wakefield opposed the Bill. Messrs Stout, Barton Rees, and Moss supported it. On a division the Bill was read the second time by 47 against 23. Mr Curtis moved the second reading of the Education Act Amendment Bill. A good deal of objection was raised to the Bill on the ground that it would simply be a return to denominational ism. On the other hand it was strongly supported on the ground that it could not do any harm, as no religious education would Le given in the schools, and it would be a great boon to a large section of the people. After considerable discussion the Bill was shelved by the adjournment of the House being carried by a majority of one, namely 31 to .'so, without the debate having been adjourned. The House adjourned at 1230 p.m.
