Capt. Edwin predicts the approach of bad weather from the northward. The Custom receipts for the week ending to-day were X'52G IGs lOd. Wk regret to hear of two sudden deaths which have recently taken place in Marlborough. Miss Ward, eldest daughter of Mr Joseph Ward, died suddenly on Thursday night, aud, last night, Mr Eccles, whose wife, the daughter of Mr Henry Redwood, died about two mouths ago, The annual general meeting of the Artillery volunteers was held at the Nelson Hotel on Thursday evening last, Major Pitt in the chair. The accounts having been read and adopted, the following nsembers were elected on the committee : — Sergt. Major Wimsett, Quarter Master Sergt. Armstrong* Sergt. Bird, Sergt. Hill, and Gunners Hood, Topliss, and 11. Hodgson. Lieut. West was re-elected Secretary and Treasurer. Ser"t. Wimsett and Sergt. Bird were appointed on the Hall Committee, and Lieut. Ashcrof t and Gunner Hood on the Range Committee. G mners Topliss aud Jackson were appointed auditors. It was decided to hold the anuu.il dinner at^as early a date as could be arranged. The West Coast papers do not approve of Mr Warden Shaw's removal from Reefton, if we may judge from the following extracts. The Grey River Argus says : — " As to Mr Shaws special qualifications for a magisterial position, they may be admitted by the fact that not a single judgment of his has been irapugued, and that, paiticularly in mining cases, his decisions, although bound to offend the losing party, have always been admitted to be fair and equitable. Apart, however, from these considerations, there is really no necessity for reducing the judicial officers on the West Coast, and the present proposal of the Government will neither be economical nor advantageous to the public interest. With reference to the same gentleman, the West Coast Times says :— "The loss of the appointment to Mr Shaw will be a- matter of little or no consequence, as he will readily find scope for his legal abilities in the profession to which he belongs. We may state that Mr Shaw recently passed one of the most creditable examinations as a barrister aud solicitor, upon which he has been highly complimented by the judicial authorities. We may add of our own knowledge that the Chief Justice expressed the opinion that in all his experience no examination had been so creditably passed."
