CORRESPONDENCE.

To the Editos op the 'Evening Mail.'

Sir, — I noticed in your recent issues, the report, of meetings held in Christchurch and Greymouth, advocating the railway from the former to the latter place. They seem to have overlooked the most essential points in their eager desire to have a railway. They forgot that to make a railway from Christchurch to Greymouth the line will be of great length over very rough country, and very sparsely inhabited, and will be so for years to come. No doubt it would be very desirable for Christchurch to have the railway there, but I am sure that the finances of the country are not sufficiently good to undertake such expensive works at present. They also forgot (I think Nelson people have forgotten it too) that Nelsou bad a fh'3t right to the railway, havingbeen promised it years ago, and we all know that it can be made more cheaply and better paying than any other, especially if taken by the western route which I have indicated before. The question now is, have not the Nelson people pluck enough to call a public meeting, where the matter can be fairly and openly discussed, and the claims of the different routes openly brought to light. For my part I challenge anyone to show cause why the railway from Nelson to West Coast should not be the first, to be gone on with, and why the Tadmor and luangahua route should not be the one adopted. I hope you will find space for this, as it is iuy_last,,oiij:his subject. I am, &c. E. Ore. Nelson, Aug. 14, 1878.
