The Customs receipts for the week ending to-day were £727 13s o<3. Ax entertainment that promises to be a very attractive one is to be given at Stoke on Wednesday next by the Wesleyan Church Choir and the local String Band. A special train will be laid on for the occasion, « Inch will give the townspeople an opportunity, of which many will doubtless avail themselves, of being present. There is one civil action for trial in the District Court on Monday, namely, Eden v. Patterson. A jury has been smnnioued upon the application of the plaintiff. Mr Acton Adams is counsel for the plaintiff, and Mr Pitt for the defendant, An artillery manual is now baiitg printed 1 at the Government Priuting Uffice, for instruction in the use of the new giiris now on their way froiii England for the harbor defences of New Zealand. The brewers (says the New Zealander) do not at all like the proposed tax on Colonial beer, and they are well represented in the House by the hon. member for Nelsou, Mr Sharp, who, yesterday, we learn, convened a meeting of the trade to consider the Treasurer's proposal. We believe it was decided to endeavor to get the proposed duty reduced from three half-pence per gallon to one halfpenny a gallon.
