j TTT_ ■,!., _--,- .J>,, _ r ,■*■-■■ !■ ' i.. iii.li ilM.ii> For the first time in Holland the degree of Doctor of Medicine has been conferred upon a woman, Miss Alleta Jacobs, a lady whose intention to practise in medicine at Amsterdam is announced. Mr HughLennon, the well-known agricultural implement maker in Melbourne, has juat taken out a patent for making ploughshares by machinery, by which means a great improTement is effected. The explorations in the Woodspit Colliery after the explosion revealed sickening sights. The bodies of many of the poor fellows were found lying clustered together, and these were removed to the pit and round the shaft: Carts were kept employed all day conveying the bodies from the pit to the shed, where they were washed and placed in the coffins provided. During the interval between the laying out of the bodies and the arrival of the carts with another load, the relatives and friends of the deceased were admitted to the shed for the purpose of identifying the bodies. This was not so difficult a task in raany cases as those previously recovered, for some of the men were bardly disfigured. The explorers came across the bodies of nineteen men in one or the slants, all close together. These poor fellows had evidently t heard the explosion or felt the " suck," and had immediately left their working places and run for the pit, but being overcome by -the choke-damp, had fallen and died. It is said that had these men managed to travel a short distance further they would, in all probability, have been saved. From eight o'clock in the morning to four o'clock in the afternoon, fifty bodies were taken out of the pit. ' The following advertisement, headed " A life partner wanted," appears in the Mqtaum (Otago) Ensign -.—" The advertiser does not go in for a speculation, but requires a ! companion with whom he can confide. He is 26 years of age, and being tired of single blessedness thinks it necessary that he should enter into partnership. Without Ving egotistical, be believes he. is not a bad fellow. The. proposal of his health at' public dinners is. always followed by 'He's a jolly good fellow,' and he has generally to respond to the toast of 'The Ladies.' Bashfulness is his reason for having recourse to the columns of the Mataura Ensign* His funds are quite sufficient to meet the demands of a family. He is perfectly aware that many attempts will be made to convert his honest intentions into burlesque, but he is propared for all this, and warns all who are foolhardy enough to do so that the consequences will not be light. Applications, enclosing carte de vitite. addressed 'XYZ, Mataura Ensign office,' will . receive prompt attention." In connection with the death of Te Keimama, an up-river chief, some little time ago, it is related (says the Wanganui Herald) that his heirs, becoming possessed by his decease of some little property, thought fit to give the old man a respectable European funeral, so they sent down to a local storekeeper for a coffin. The coffin, decorated with crape and fringe andßtuff, was taken up in a canoe, Te Eeimana was put in it and hawked round to two or three pahs in the neighborhood before burial, to show how grandly the thing was done. The fringe, &c, was then taken off the coffin, and constructed into head-dresses for the lady friends of the deceased, and it jb authoritatively stated that Te Reimana's successor wears one of the German silver coffin plates > upon hia breast.
