Moved by Mr Edwards, reeonded by Mr "BurreH, an ] sfronply supported by Mr Dpnefccr.—Thnt Mr Macronbon be rhairmon of «hp "Beard for the currenf yror. CVn'pd unnrimrrisir. After p\ !f . crpfi-m <\ on o f ni j n(]tpfl o f !fipt. mrptint', tl.p Secretary made thp following; report — In aocririJanrß with a resnluiion passed last m-Ptinrr, T nccornpunipd the mp.mbpTs of tbp Sub-di«trict of Riwnka ti >n?ppnt "that jwrt of tin* rivpr comTtlfiined of by Messrs Goodftll nnd Dorlson, wbpro they nllego the dams constructed for the purpose of directing the water to the Riwrtkn enfrancp, have been ibri rauae of flooding their lands After carefully looking over the ground it was considered advisable, if th* course of (he river were diverted at all, to do so higher up, where a better fall can be pof, than nt the place shown on the plan laid before the Board las' mppiini.', nnd in the menntime it was cnnsiopi-pd the sufferers should bp allowe J fo cut a difch shove the higher dflrr>, en that iherp misht b« Jpss ebaDfl* of tha lauds b^inir flooded. I have inepecrpd^ (he Brooklyn Crppk, and am of opinion (hat, it is not ndvisable to bridge fhe prpspnt , watercourse, as there is a pronahilifyof a coarse hem? washed oot on (he flour mill Bide of the creek. I think (although (he present crcssiog h a very bad one), that it wouid be better to delay building: n for the present. On the old roill road, at Riwaka, considpra^lp daoinse is bring done to Mr Holyoske's land by (hp Wfiter flowing ncross (hp Ton', which is ako cut about. Mr Holyoake offers to contribute towards the coat of rewniring the ro»d, which, if done, would, to acme extent, prevent so much wa<pr from flowing on h!8 land. Thn gl?<jht damage done (o his land by the late floods at Neatimoti has bf-eu repaired. I have prepared a plan and invited tenders for a cart bridge over the Orinoco river, but to build one above flood mark nnd in a safe position will exceed fh? amount at which it was formerly estimated. A bridge could be built nearer the confluence of the Motuf-ki and Orinoco rivers at consirlernbly l ess c^st, but as the Motueka river is Hetlinp; info and taking the bauk away b Bhort distance higher up, I fear there is a probability of a bridge built there heing washed away. The continued, bad weather has made some of the roads, where nol metalled, almost impassable, and it is only fine weßther that will improve them. Resolved — That the Secretary call upon the owners of land adjoining the Swamp roflde, Riw..ka, in order to sscerfHin whether thpy are willing to conirioute towards clearing out the ditches, and should they re'use to do so, to (oka steps to compel them to clear the watercourses running through their lands. Resohed— ln reply; to a letter from Mesers Bensem«nn Bros. — That they be informed the road alluded to in their letter shell be attended to as soon as the weather will permit, but the Board declines to Epend public money in executing useless and unprofitable work during the rainy season. Resolved — In reply to a letter from Mr W. Simpson. That the Board declines to be at the cost of making a culvert over the ditch leading to his land, bs in the opinion of the Board lie has do better claim to such an expenditure being made for his sole benefit than any other person vybose property is bounded by a public road. Reaolved— That the old Mill road near Mr Holyoake's be improved, provided he contributes towards the coßt. Letter from the Chairman of the Akaroa Road Board was read asking the Board to co-operate in urging upon the Members of Parliament the desirability of passing »n Act setting aside Crown Lend as endowments to RoaJ Boards. Resolved — That it is desirable a strip of bush should be felted alongside certain fotds in tliH ctis'tict, and tha* the S'fie'Hiy fn (favour to anaiicrwill) tiie owners of laixJ, wlio^h pro-p.-nif" me iii.iiiir.ej by auch roadd lor the vvoi k to lie <ione. Resolves! — That the Secretary inspect the road leading to Chapman's, Pangatotara, with the view of protecling the s. me from the encroachments of the Sbaguery creek. Resolved — That in future all large stones be picked 06 the road, and brokea on the sides at per yard, and that horses and caits be employed at per day. instead of bullocks and carts." Resolved — That the Board considers it highly expedient to aecerjaiu whether the provisions of the Public Works Act 1876, section 98 can be enforced, so as 10 comppl owners oi land, whose goree hedges have spread upon the roads, to clear .the eame, aod that the Secretary ie hereby instructed to proceed against &ty person who m»y refuse to comply
