The Nelson Evening Mail. TUESDAY, JULY 30, 1878.

A very clever performance will be given at the Theatre Royal this evening, when the Marionettes will appear in Christy Minstrel performances, after which there will be a pantomime, and the entertainment will terminate with a most gorgeous transformation

scene,

The attendance at the Theatre last uight was much larger than might have been expected after so severe a storm as broke over the city shortly before the performance commenced, and it was noticeable that the special train brought in a number of country people bent on being present. The performance opened with the amusing farce •• No I. round the corner," and was followed by the "Blinding scene from King John," in which Miss Amy Thornton appeared to great advantage as Prince Arthur, and Mr Thornton's Hubert was a careful piece of acting. The scene was received with most hearty applause, and both artistes were called before the curtain " Trial by Jury " went fully as well as ever and the programme was brought to an end by the very amusing farce " Whitebait at Greenwich."

The difficulties sometimes thrown in the way of those who want to get married have been illustrated latety here in the following way: — The intended bridegroom arrived from another province and took up his abode at Spring Grove, where the friends of his future bride reside. A fortnight slipped an'ay, the feast was prepared, and the guests duly invited. There remained only the trifling ceremony of obtaining the Registrar's certificate to authorise the clergyman

t$ porYorni the ceremony. But alas! on arriving at the office it was found to be closed, and enquiry elicited that Mr Chattock, the Registrar, resigned some weeks ago, and the Government had neglected to appoint anyone in his place. An application' to the Registrar in Nejson v&h necessarily of no use, as tfce Taw inexorably demands a resideuce of three days at least in the " district" prior to the issue of a certificate. So as there appeared no immediate prospect of any successor arriving to replace Mr Chattock, the bridegroom elect was compelled tit some expense add much iudonvehieude and annoyance to mbV-e into the Nelson district for tntee or, f ptir days iti .order tB Beß.onife A candidate duly prepared for riiatriniohy. CokisWcVibg the population and age of the settlement it is astonishing that it has been left so long without a Registrar. Slarriage) it is evident; is ol;t of the {Question in that unfortunate locality ; burials must be in defiance of the law without a certificate; as to the registration of births, that of course is as impossible as the gettiug married. Nothing succeeds like success, says the French proverb. This is strikingly exemplified by the popularity attained by a stimulating invigorant and diuretic some twenty-five years ago, and which has ever since gone on conquering weakeness, kidney disease, gravel, rheumatism, dyspepsia, and various other maladies. It is also re garded by physicians as an efficient protection against compialnts caused by variations of the weather, aud is known to the pnblicj as Udolpho Wolfe's SckiKuAsi Akomatic Schnapps.— AdVt.
