Wellington, Tuesday. Ihe New Zeiiander this morning announces that the survey of the Waimate plains will be commenced to-day uuder the direction of Major Brown. It is (the New Zenlander says) expected that the natives will send out a number of women ca enter a kind of formal protest against the survey being proceeded with but nothing like strong opposition is anticipated.

Christcudrch, Tuesday. The north-west gale did considerable damage in the country districts. Two buildings and several partly erected were blown down, others moved off their piles, and iunumerable windows smashed. The damage to the Northern railway will take weeks to repair. The Rakaia and Ashburton rivers are higher than has been known for many years, but did no damage. The Canterbury Jockey Club after a long discussion resolved to endorse the decision of the Dunedin Club in removing the disqualification in the Fishhook case.

As an instance of the value of freehold property in Christchurcb, a building site in High-street, opposite the triangle, has been let for 33 years at £16 3s 4dper foot. The Canterbury Cricket Association have resolved to send an eleven to Melbourne next season, and have decided to challenge the following clubs:— Melbourne east, Melbourne south, Melbourne, Ballarat, Bohemian, aud Richmond clubs. They have also decided to invite the English team of gentleman players to visit Christchurch.

Port Chalmers, Tuesday. A serious accident occurred at Port Chalmers to Harry Maitland, eldest son of J. P. Maitland, Chief Commissioner of the Waste Lands Board. The young gentleman had visited the port on horseback, and while engaged in remounting, the horse became restive, and caused Maitland to fall on his head heavily. He was at once put to bed. and visited by Dr. Drysdale, who found him suffering from concussion of the brain.
